Need a quick pick-me-up to help you get through a difficult weekday? Require an instant shot of energy to help you tackle that commute into work? You’re not alone, which is one reason why both the coffee van and cafés are gaining supremacy on the high street. But is that intense caffeine shot bad for you?
Far from it. There’s a growing body of evidence that supports the health benefits of coffee in all kinds of scenarios. If you’re looking for an excuse to indulge in your daily cup of mobile coffee on the go, here are just three:
- Coffee is a high source of natural antioxidants; in fact, a recent US study has estimated that it’s the leading source for most Americans! And, as we’re all learning, antioxidants do wonders in protecting our cells from damage caused by free radicals, such as those introduced by pollution, passive smoke inhalation and exposure to UV rays.
- Coffee is also known to have certain anti-inflammatory properties and has been found to protect the body’s nerve endings. While further research is needed to prove conclusively why this may be the case, studies are showing time and time again that caffeine may be a significant factor in preventing or assisting with the symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
- If you’re on a diet, ask the barista at your local mobile coffee van for a black coffee. You’ll be impressed to learn there are only around two calories in a standard cup of black coffee. Obviously, adding milk and sugar is going to increase that, but just try it without – you’ll appreciate the flavour of the coffee more and it doesn’t take long to get used to. Forget so-called diet drinks: they can’t compare in taste or health benefits!
All things in moderation, as they say…but there’s certainly no need to steer clear of your daily treat from the coffee van with health benefits like these!
